In each of the ‘tales’ in this collection, the author skillfully weaves magical, existential realism into sensory based narrative. While “The Pilgram” initially purports to offer a chronicle that parellels Hemingway’s “A Farewell To Arms,” containing several stories within a story, the plot veers suddenly into the realm of myth where the promise of true love turns tragic.

While his stories span different countries, cultures and periods of time, Dobrian’s narrators share a gift of observation. Whether they are battling in the Spanish Civil War, running away from shame about an incident that occurred at their own wedding or describing a barbaric tribal ritual, the narrators’ attention to physical details keeps the reader grounded and focused as the suspense builds.
